igubal® Design

Maintenance-free operation and low-clearance fitting of the inner race in the housing is achieved by insert-molding.
The combination of materials is an important factor for this process, as this determines the inner race’s freedom
of movement within the housing. This innovative and efficient method of manufacturing allows igus to offer high-tech
materials at a very affordable price.
Inner race
The inner race of the standard spherical bearings is made of iglide L280, a low wear material with a coefficient
of friction of 0.08- 0.15, running dry. The stick-slip tendency is extremely low, a fact of particular significance
in cases of low loads and very slow speeds.
Housing
The housing of igubal spherical bearings are made from igulen G2, a particularly impact-resistant, long fiber-reinforced
thermoplastic.
Loads
The pressure capacity of all igubal bearings is very high at normal ambient temperatures. They absorb high forces,
possess very good dampening properties, yet weigh only a fifth as much as conventional metallic spherical bearings.
However, plastic-specific properties, such as dependence on temperature and behavior under long-time stressing,
must be taken into consideration when using igubal bearings. The load capacity of the rod end bearing should therefore
be checked in a performance test, particularly if they are to be used under continuously high loads and at elevated
temperatures.
Coefficient of friction and velocity
One important advantage of igubal spherical bearings is that rapid, rotary movements of a mounted shaft take place
directly in the spherical portion, made of iglide L280. In metallic rod ends, rotary motion takes place between
the race and the spherical bearing. High speeds can be achieved with igubal bearings.
igubal bearings are used in such a way that the angular movements of the spherical bearings take place at the spherical
outer diameter. In contrast, rotations of the shaft are supported directly in the I.D. of the spherical portion.
The advantage, therefore, lies in the plastic vs. steel relationship. Plastic produces lower friction and permits
high speeds, even when running dry.
Depending on the amount of radial load, maximum speeds of up to 295 ft/min are possible with rotary motion.
Temperature Range
All igubal bearings can be used at temperatures between -40 ° F and a maximum of +275 ° F. The loss in
mechanical strength at higher temperatures must be taken into consideration: As temperatures rise, load capacity
decreases.

Chemical Resistance
Both the spherical bearing, made of iglide L280, and the housing are resistant to weak alkalis and weak acids,
as well as to fuels and all types of lubricants. Please contact us if you have any questions about the chemical
resistance of igubal bearings.
Installation of Spherical Bearings
Igubal Spherical Bearings are simply press-fit into the housing bore.
