RIVSCREW®
S.E.C. Cartridge Heat Sink/Fan Fastener
BENEFITS
Order Samples
 |
- Installs like a
rivet, removes like a screw, with a standard hex
key.
- Cartridge loaded
fasteners facilitate rapid placement.
- Head forming action -
from flat to dome - provides superior joint clamp
load.
- Removability allows
for rework and heat sink recycling.
- Placement tooling can
place four fasteners simultaneously.
- Cold formed threads
are mechanically locked - no joint loosening due
to vibration.

Setting Sequence
- RIVSCREW® fastener is
inserted into S.E.C. Cartridge / Heatsink assembly.
RIVSCREW® rests against the tool nose piece, and a
special mandrel (the hex shaped wire drawn through the
fastener) ensures no contact is made with the S.E.C.
Cartridge PCB.
- The mandrel is pulled through
the barrel of the fastener expanding the RIVSCREW®
radially, reforming the internal shape of the fastener
from round to hex, and reforming the head from flat to
dome.
- A completed placement -
vibration proof and removable.
S.E.C. Cartridge Assembly
Machine Overview
The following photographs show the
basic Hydra 1000/4 assembly machine, part number MA30796/A. The
machine is constructed from extruded Aluminum Alloy sections and
is fitted with castors. The operation of the machine is
controlled by an Omron QM1-CPU21-E Programmable Logic Controller
together with SMC pneumatic valves and actuators. The basic
operation of the equipment is described below.
The starting position of the
system is:- machine ready for operation with placing tools loaded
with fasteners, cycle ready lamp on.
- The S.E.C. Cartridge is
located into the nest.
- The Heatsink is located onto
the S.E.C Cartridge.
- The operator depresses the
two opto-touch palm buttons and the automatic assembly
sequence commences with the nest clamps closing onto the
component.
- The nest and components are
lifted by a vertical slide to a position where the four
RIVSCREW® (Part number 1712-3510) enter into the holes
and a closing force is applied to the joint.
- The fasteners are installed
simultaneously by the four hydraulically actuated placing
tools. The broaching cycle is monitored by sensors to
ensure that correct placement has taken place within
pre-determined parameters.
- The vertical slide retracts
lowering the nest and assembled parts away from the
placing tools.
- The next fasteners are fed
forward through the split nose jaws and a soft set action
pulls the fastener to the face of the nose jaws. The
clamps are released completing the assembly sequence.
- The operator removes the
S.E.C. Cartridge assembly.
A light guard is fitted to protect
the operator from moving parts by stopping the automatic sequence
at any point should the operator place their hands into the
working area of the machine.
The four placing tools are
reloaded by releasing a latch and rotating the tools to a
horizontal position - thus presenting the nose equipment towards
the operator.
The tail jaws that retain the
mandrel within the placing tool are released and the operator
removes the four empty mandrels and follower springs. The
follower springs are removed and the mandrels replenished with a
fresh pod of fasteners. The follower springs are slid back onto
the mandrels which are then fitted back into the tools.
The tools are rotated to the
vertical position and the latch locks the tools in the correct
position for subsequent operation.

Preventative
Maintenance Schedule for Four Head Machine
The following details the daily,
weekly and monthly schedule for preventative maintenance on the
four head machine for assembly of the heat sink to the S.E.C.
Cartridge.
Daily:
- Inspect mandrels for wear and
damage. ( 1 minute)
- Inspect oil reservoir for
correct level and cleanliness of oil. ( 1 minute)
- Inspect follower springs for
wear and damage. ( 1 minute
- Inspect front jaws for wear
and damage. ( 1 minute)
- Clean lens of light curtain
by wiping with clean dry cloth. ( 1 minute)
- Actuate machine and break
light curtain beam to interrupt cycle. ( 1 minute)
Weekly:
- Check all mechanical
connections and tighten as needed. ( 5 minutes)
- Check all hoses and hydraulic
connections for leaks. ( 5 minutes)
- Check alignment of placing
heads with a component in place. ( 2 minutes)
- Check and record machine
cycle count. ( 1 minute)
- If machine has cycled more
than 15,000 times then go to monthly
Monthly or 15,000 cycles:
- Remove tail jaw assembly for
examination and cleaning. ( 20 minutes)
- Remove front jaws for
examination and cleaning. (10 minutes)
- Remove cursor assembly for
examination and cleaning. ( 5 minutes)
The steps involved and tools
required to carry out these procedures will be included in the
maintenance and operations manual. Please advise if you have any
questions or concerns.
RIVSCREW® vs.
Clips
Heatsink to aluminum plate
applications:
- Clips do not spread thermal
grease as consistently as RIVSCREW®, resulting in higher
running temperatures, and shorter component life.
- The clamp load offered by
clips is lower than RIVSCREW®, resulting in higher
running temperatures, and shorter component life.
- Clips can come loose as a
result of a drop test.
- Clips are weaker in shear
compared to RIVSCREW®.
- Clips have a lower tensile
strength compared to RIVSCREW®.
- Clips must be manually
installed.
- RIVSCREW® can be placed at a
rate of 1500 per hour.
- Four RIVSCREW® can be placed
simultaneously, reducing operator dependent activities
